About Promised Land Lake
Promised Land Lake sits in Pike County in northeastern Pennsylvania, a few miles from the Delaware State Forest and roughly 25 miles east of Scranton. The lake was built in the 1900s when a dam was raised on the headwaters of Shohola Creek, part of a state park established in 1902 on land once logged and farmed by settlers who found the surrounding soil too poor to keep working. The park took its name from the surrounding township, itself named, by local tradition, after a group of travelers who mistook the area for their journey's end.
The lake covers about 423 acres and holds roughly nine miles of shoreline, most of it bordered by state forest rather than private development, which keeps the shore largely wooded and undeveloped. It draws anglers after bass, pickerel, and panfish, along with paddlers and campers using the surrounding state park's cabins and campsites. Swimming beaches and boat rentals operate seasonally, and the park limits motors to electric trolling engines, which keeps the water quiet compared to larger recreational lakes in the region.
