About Shawnee Lake

Shawnee Lake is the centerpiece of Shawnee State Park, an impounded lake built across a valley stream in the Allegheny highlands of western Pennsylvania. It covers roughly 455 acres with about 7 miles of shoreline and reaches a maximum depth near 35 feet, modest numbers that keep the lake more suited to canoes, small fishing boats, and swimming than to open-water cruising. The surrounding land stayed in state hands as parkland rather than private development, so the shoreline is largely forested rather than lined with cottages, a pattern common to Pennsylvania's mid-century reservoir parks.

The park draws campers, anglers, and day visitors from Johnstown and the surrounding towns of central Pennsylvania, with a swimming beach, boat launch, and campground built along the lake's edge. Fishing is the main draw, with warm-water species stocked to support a modest sport fishery typical of Pennsylvania's state park lakes. Because the lake has no large towns directly on its banks, traffic on the water stays light compared to larger regional reservoirs. Its shape follows the contour of the dammed valley, narrowing into coves where the original stream channels ran before the water rose behind the dam.

Why we cut this one
Shawnee Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Shawnee Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Shawnee Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 6 ft, 12 ft, 18 ft, 24 ft, 29 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 35 ft. The lake covers about 0.8 square miles, and 20 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Shawnee Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Shawnee Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Shawnee Lake.

Questions

Shawnee Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Shawnee Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Shawnee Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
