About Lake Holiday
Lake Holiday sits in Frederick County, Virginia, a short drive northwest of Winchester in the lower Shenandoah Valley. The lake was formed by damming a stream to create the centerpiece of a private residential development, one of several lake communities built across the mid-Atlantic in the twentieth century to draw homeowners out of nearby cities. Access is restricted to property owners and their guests, and the land around the shoreline is platted into residential lots rather than left as open parkland. The lake covers roughly 200 acres and holds about five miles of shoreline within the gated boundary.
The lake is used mainly for fishing, boating, and swimming by the households along its shore, with a property owners' association managing the dam, roads, and common grounds inside the development. Winchester, the nearest city, anchors the northern Shenandoah Valley and predates the lake by more than a century, having grown up around colonial-era wagon roads. Depth in the lake reaches about 62 feet near the dam, notable for a community lake of its size, giving it more cold-water habitat than the shallow coves that make up most of its perimeter.
