About Smith Mountain Lake

Smith Mountain Lake was created in 1963 when Appalachian Power dammed the Roanoke River at the gap in Smith Mountain. It has about 20,600 acres, 500 miles of shoreline and depths to 250 feet near the dam, and it is the second-largest lake in the state.

Moneta, Huddleston, Penhook and the Westlake area are the shore communities, with Roanoke and Lynchburg each about forty-five minutes away. The 1991 film 'What About Bob?' was shot here, which the lake has never quite stopped mentioning.

On the board
  • 24 shore towns named, with a star on each
  • 2,044 roads engraved around the shore, 1 of them labeled
  • 6 depth layers, each step engraved with its depth in feet
  • Compass rose, title block with coordinates, max depth and area; keyhole hanger on the back
Why we cut this one
Smith Mountain Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.
