About Lake Merriweather

Lake Merriweather sits inside Goshen Scout Reservation, a camp operated by the Blue Ridge Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts of America in the mountains west of Lynchburg, Virginia. The lake was built as a reservoir to serve the camp's waterfront program, impounding a creek within the reservation's boundary. At roughly 366 acres, it is large enough to run canoeing, sailing, and motorboating merit badge classes without crowding, and its six miles of shoreline wrap around wooded coves that scouts have paddled for decades.

The lake's basin varies enough that its modeled maximum depth reaches about 54 feet, deep for a reservoir its size, while much of the shoreline stays shallow enough for beginner paddlers. Access is restricted to scouts, staff, and visiting troops rather than the public, so the water sees rowboats, canoes, and small sailboats more than motor traffic. Surrounding ridgelines keep the lake out of sight from nearby roads, and the closest towns of any size, including Goshen and Lexington, sit several miles east, with Lynchburg further south.

Why we cut this one
Lake Merriweather is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Lake Merriweather depth chart, in wood

This is a Lake Merriweather depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 9 ft, 18 ft, 27 ft, 36 ft, 45 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 54 ft. The lake covers about 0.6 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Lake Merriweather map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Lake Merriweather for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Lake Merriweather.

Questions

Lake Merriweather map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Lake Merriweather; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Lake Merriweather is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
