About Lake Moomaw
Lake Moomaw was created by the Army Corps of Engineers, which built Gathright Dam on the Jackson River and filled the lake between 1979 and 1982 for flood control on the James River system. It covers close to 2,500 acres and sits almost entirely within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests near Covington, in Virginia's Allegheny Highlands. The lake is named for Benjamin Moomaw, who pushed for the project's approval, while the dam takes its name from the family whose land it flooded. Trout, bass and crappie fishing draw people to a shoreline with almost no private development.

Is it made from real depth data?
Yes. Lake Moomaw is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.
