The lake
About Lake Weiss
Lake Weiss covers about 30,200 acres in the northeast corner of Alabama, formed in 1961 when Alabama Power closed Weiss Dam on the Coosa River near the Georgia line. It runs to about 62 feet deep and is fed by the Coosa along with the Chattooga and Little rivers. Centre, Alabama, is the lake's main town, and Cherokee County calls itself the Crappie Capital of the World because of it. The dam and lake are named for Fernand Weiss, a former Alabama Power chief engineer.
