About Millwood Lake
Millwood Lake sits on the Little River in southwest Arkansas, near Ashdown and about 30 miles from Texarkana. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the dam and impounded the reservoir in 1966 for flood control on the Red River system. Rather than clear the bottomland hardwood forest first, crews let the reservoir flood standing timber, leaving stands of dead trees and cypress that still rise out of the water across much of the lake today.
The lake covers about 23,032 acres with roughly 55 miles of shoreline, much of it shallow and stump-filled rather than open water. That structure made it a destination for crappie anglers, and Millwood has placed regularly among the top crappie lakes ranked by national fishing publications. Millwood State Park sits on its southeastern shore, and the surrounding towns, Ashdown and Saratoga among them, are small, timber- and farm-country communities rather than resort towns.
