About Lake Pocotopaug
Lake Pocotopaug sits in East Hampton, Connecticut, roughly 20 miles south of Hartford. At about 450 acres it is the largest lake in the town, with a shoreline that runs close to five miles and a deepest point of about 38 feet. East Hampton built its early economy on bell manufacturing through the 1800s, with small foundries and shops along the streams feeding the lake, which earned the town the nickname "Belltown, USA."
As the bell trade declined in the early 1900s, the lake itself became the town's main draw, drawing cottages, boarding houses, and eventually year-round homes along its edges. Generations of local families have fished, swum, and boated on its water, and it remains the geographic center of a small Middlesex County town that has stayed modest in size while the lake around it kept drawing people back each summer.
