About Lake Winchester
Lake Winchester sits in the hills of northwestern Connecticut, north of Waterbury, ringed by year-round houses and summer cottages that share access roads down to the water. The lake covers about 230 acres, small enough that a slow lap by canoe or kayak takes an afternoon rather than a full day. Anglers work the shoreline for bass and panfish, and a handful of small boats cross it in summer, but there is no marina and no public beach crowding the banks.
The lake bottoms out at about 74 feet, deep for its size, with roughly four miles of shoreline wrapped around a body of water that covers only 230 acres — a ratio that makes the shore feel longer and more irregular than the acreage suggests. Coves and points break up sightlines across the water, so no single vantage shows the whole lake at once. That mix of depth and a cut-up shoreline is what keeps the fishing quiet, even as more of the surrounding hillside gets built up with houses.
