About New Naugatuck Reservoir

New Naugatuck Reservoir sits in New Haven County a few miles from Waterbury, in the hill country between the Naugatuck and Housatonic watersheds. Like most reservoirs carrying the name of a nearby river valley, it was impounded to hold drinking water for the surrounding towns rather than shaped by a glacier or a natural basin. At roughly 74 acres, it is small compared with the region's larger public water-supply lakes, and its shoreline runs about two miles around.

Because it functions as a water-supply reservoir, access tends to be more restricted than on a typical recreational lake: shoreline development is limited, and many reservoirs of this type prohibit swimming and gas motors to protect water quality. That restriction is also what keeps the water quiet. The people who use it are mostly local anglers working the shallows and coves rather than boaters or vacationers, and the surrounding land tends to stay wooded rather than built up, since it doubles as a buffer for the water supply itself.

Why we cut this one
New Naugatuck Reservoir is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

New Naugatuck Reservoir depth chart, in wood

This is a New Naugatuck Reservoir depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 6 ft, 11 ft, 17 ft, 22 ft, 28 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 33 ft. The lake covers about 0.1 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A New Naugatuck Reservoir map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on New Naugatuck Reservoir for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your New Naugatuck Reservoir.

Questions

New Naugatuck Reservoir map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of New Naugatuck Reservoir; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. New Naugatuck Reservoir is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
