The lake

About Lake Pend Oreille

Lake Pend Oreille in the Idaho panhandle is 43 miles long and 1,150 feet deep, the fifth-deepest lake in the United States, which is why the Navy has run acoustic research and quiet-submarine testing at Bayview since the Second World War. The name is French for 'ear pendant', from the shell ornaments of the Kalispel people.

Sandpoint sits at the north end under Schweitzer Mountain, with the Long Bridge carrying US-95 across the lake; Hope, Bayview and Garfield Bay are the smaller shore communities. The lake trout and Kamloops rainbows here run to record size.
