About Redfish Lake
Redfish Lake is a glacial lake in Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreation Area, carved by moraines below the granite spires of the Sawtooth Range and named for the sockeye salmon that once turned its inlet red with spawning fish each summer. It runs about 4.5 miles long and drops to 387 feet deep, the largest lake in the recreation area. Snake and Columbia River dams nearly wiped out the run — one lone fish, 'Lonesome Larry,' returned in 1992 — but a hatchery program has since restored a small annual migration, still one of the longest salmon journeys in the world.
