About Brandy Pond
Brandy Pond sits in Naples, Maine, part of a chain of lakes linking Sebago Lake to Long Lake. Boats travel between the two through the Songo River and the Songo Lock, built in 1830 and still hand-operated, the only lock system in the state. The pond covers roughly 5,839 acres with about 36 miles of shoreline and reaches a modeled depth near 45 feet. Its shape follows the low corridor between the larger lakes, making it more a wide connecting basin than a self-contained lake.
Naples grew around this water traffic, with the village center facing the pond where the Songo River empties in. The Songo River Queen II, a paddlewheel excursion boat, has carried passengers through the lock and along the pond since the 1970s. Camps and cottages line stretches of the shore, and the pond serves mostly as a passage for boaters moving between Sebago and Long Lake rather than a destination of its own. Water traffic peaks in summer with the lock handling small pleasure boats.
