The lake

About Moosehead Lake

Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in Maine and the largest mountain lake in the eastern United States, about 40 miles long with more than 400 miles of shoreline and depths to 246 feet. Mount Kineo, a sheer 700-foot rhyolite cliff, rises from a peninsula mid-lake; its flint was traded across the Northeast for thousands of years.

Greenville at the south end is the gateway town; Rockwood faces Kineo across the narrows. Thoreau paddled here in 1857 with a Penobscot guide, and the steamboat Katahdin still runs from Greenville in summer.
