About Cobbosseecontee Lake
Cobbosseecontee Lake sits in Kennebec County, Maine, bordered by the towns of Winthrop, Manchester, and Monmouth, a few miles west of Augusta. Its name is Abenaki in origin, commonly translated as a place where sturgeon were once plentiful. The lake drains north through Cobbossee Stream, which drops through a series of falls before reaching the Kennebec River at Gardiner, a route that powered sawmills and later textile and paper mills through the 1800s and early 1900s.
The lake's shoreline runs roughly 44 miles around a series of coves, points, and connected basins, giving it an irregular outline rather than a simple oval. Camps and year-round homes line much of that shore, built up steadily through the 20th century as Winthrop and Manchester grew as lake communities within commuting distance of Augusta. It remains a working recreational lake, used for boating and fishing, with public access maintained through town and state boat launches.
