About Megunticook Lake

Megunticook Lake sits between the towns of Camden and Hope in Knox County, Maine, feeding the short Megunticook River that runs through downtown Camden to the harbor. The lake's outlet has been controlled by a dam near the river's head for over a century, originally built to power local mills. Today the lake covers roughly 1,127 acres, with a shoreline that stretches close to 20 miles as it winds around a series of coves and points. Seasonal cottages and a scattering of year-round homes line the water, along with several public and private boat launches.

The lake draws recreational boaters, anglers, and swimmers, with a town-owned beach at Barrett's Cove providing public access. Its depth reaches about 70 feet, though much of the lake stays shallow, and its irregular outline, more inlet than oval, sets it apart from the deeper, rounder lakes farther inland in Maine. Fishing focuses on smallmouth bass and pickerel, and paddlers use the coves for calmer water, away from motorboat traffic on the main body.

Why we cut this one
Megunticook Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Megunticook Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Megunticook Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 12 ft, 23 ft, 35 ft, 47 ft, 59 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 70 ft. The lake covers about 1.9 square miles, and 68 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Megunticook Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Megunticook Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Megunticook Lake.

Questions

Megunticook Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Megunticook Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Megunticook Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
