About Mousam Lake
Mousam Lake sits in southern Maine's York County, its waters draining into the Mousam River, which flows roughly twenty miles southeast to the sea at Kennebunk. The lake spreads across about 766 acres inside the towns of Shapleigh and Acton, a pair of rural communities that grew up around sawmills and gristmills powered by the river's fall. Cottages began ringing the shoreline in the early twentieth century, following a pattern common to inland Maine lakes once rail and road access made the interior reachable from Portland and the coast.
With a modeled maximum depth near 76 feet and about 13 miles of shoreline, Mousam Lake is deep enough to hold cold-water fish through the summer while its coves stay warm enough for swimming. Bass, pickerel, and stocked trout draw anglers from the surrounding towns, and the lake's size makes it large enough for waterskiing but small enough that boat traffic stays light compared to bigger lakes near Sebago. Year-round residents share the shore with summer camp owners, many of them families who have returned for generations.
