About Big Blue Lake
Big Blue Lake sits in Muskegon County, in the belt of glacially carved lakes that covers western lower Michigan. Like most inland lakes in the region, its basin was left behind by retreating ice roughly ten thousand years ago, giving it the rounded, kettle-lake shape common to the area. The lake covers about 319 acres, with roughly four miles of shoreline ringing it, mostly held by year-round residents and seasonal cottage owners rather than public parkland.
Access is mainly by private lakefront lots, and boat traffic is dominated by anglers, pontoon owners, and paddlers rather than large-craft recreation. Depth data modeled for the lake puts its deepest point at roughly 45 feet, deep enough to hold a summer thermocline and support cold-water fish alongside the panfish and bass typical of west Michigan lakes. Its location a short drive from Muskegon puts it within reach of Lake Michigan's shoreline towns while remaining a small, locally known lake rather than a regional destination.
