About Green Lake / Lake Wahbekanetta
Green Lake sits in Green Lake Township, Grand Traverse County, a few miles from Traverse City and the village of Interlochen. Older records and maps referred to it as Lake Wahbekanetta before the shorter name became standard. Interlochen Center for the Arts was founded on the strip of land between Green Lake and neighboring Duck Lake in 1928, and the surrounding shoreline filled in over the following decades with summer cottages and year-round homes. The lake has long drawn a mix of arts-camp families, retirees, and northern Michigan vacationers rather than a single dominant group.
The lake covers about 1,880 acres with roughly 11 miles of shoreline, a perimeter broken into bays and points rather than a single oval. Its maximum depth is estimated at about 52 feet, modest next to some of the region's deeper glacial lakes. A channel connects Green Lake to Duck Lake at its north end near Interlochen, linking the two into one system for boat traffic. That connection, combined with the irregular shoreline, makes the lake read more like a string of coves than one open basin.
