About Gun Lake
Gun Lake sits in southwestern Michigan, split between Barry and Allegan counties near the townships of Wayland, Shelbyville, and Bradley, roughly 20 miles southwest of Grand Rapids and 25 miles north of Kalamazoo. Like most lakes in the region, its basin was carved by glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age, leaving a body of water covering about 2,609 acres with roughly 17 miles of shoreline. The surrounding land mixes year-round homes with seasonal cottages built up through the 20th century as the lake became a weekend destination for families from Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.
Gun Lake is the site of the Gun Lake Casino, opened in 2011 and operated by the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, also known as the Gun Lake Tribe, whose reservation borders the lake's south shore. The lake itself draws a steady summer crowd of boaters, water-skiers, and anglers fishing for bass, bluegill, and walleye, with public access maintained through a state boat launch. Its moderate depth, with parts reaching about 50 feet, keeps the water cooler than shallower lakes nearby, a trait longtime cottage owners often mention when comparing it to neighboring lakes in Barry County.
