About Higgins Lake
Higgins Lake sits in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula, carved into the landscape by glacial retreat thousands of years ago. The lake spans roughly 10,045 acres, making it one of the larger inland lakes in the state, with about 22 miles of shoreline wrapping around a single open basin. Its water is known for exceptional clarity, a trait tied to its spring-fed sources and sandy bottom rather than heavy inflow from rivers or streams.
The shoreline is a mix of state park land and long-established cottage communities, drawing generations of the same families back summer after summer. Swimmers, sailors, and anglers share the lake with relatively little commercial development compared to other Michigan lakes its size. Towns near Cadillac serve as the nearest hubs for supplies and services, while the lake itself has stayed largely residential and recreational, prized locally for its depth and consistently clean water.
