About Lake Angelus
Lake Angelus sits in Oakland County, Michigan, a few miles northeast of Pontiac. Like most lakes in southeast Michigan, its basin was carved by retreating glaciers at the end of the last ice age, leaving a kettle lake ringed by moraine hills. Development around the shoreline began in the early twentieth century, as Pontiac's population grew and families looked for lake property within reach of the city.
In 1927, residents incorporated the area as the City of Lake Angelus, a separate municipality built specifically to keep zoning and shoreline control out of Pontiac's hands. It remains one of Michigan's smallest cities by population. The lake itself has no public boat launch; access runs through private lots, and the water is used for boating and fishing by the households whose property lines meet the shore.
