About Lake Chemung

Lake Chemung sits in the rolling till country west of Ann Arbor, Michigan, in a basin left behind when the last continental ice sheet retreated from the region roughly 14,000 years ago. Lakes of this size and shape in southeast Michigan are typically kettle lakes, formed where a block of buried glacial ice melted and the ground above it collapsed. At about 272 acres with roughly four miles of shoreline, it is small enough to see across from most points on the water but large enough to support year-round homes along its edge.

The lake functions as a residential lake rather than a public destination, with houses and docks lining most of its four miles of shore and boat traffic limited mostly to residents and their guests. Its modeled maximum depth of about 40 feet is enough to hold cooler water through summer, which keeps it attractive for fishing and swimming from private docks. The surrounding township is a mix of farmland and low-density subdivisions typical of Washtenaw County outside Ann Arbor, and the lake itself has stayed a quiet, mostly local body of water rather than a resort draw.

Why we cut this one
Lake Chemung is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Lake Chemung depth chart, in wood

This is a Lake Chemung depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 7 ft, 13 ft, 20 ft, 27 ft, 34 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 40 ft. The lake covers about 0.5 square miles, and 99 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Lake Chemung map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Lake Chemung for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Lake Chemung.

Questions

Lake Chemung map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Lake Chemung; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Lake Chemung is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
