About Lake Lapeer
Lake Lapeer sits in Lapeer County in Michigan's Thumb region, a short drive from both the city of Lapeer and Flint to the southwest. The lake covers roughly 220 acres, small enough to cross by kayak in an afternoon but large enough to support a ring of year-round and seasonal homes along its roughly six miles of shoreline. Lapeer County itself grew up around lumber and agriculture in the 19th century, and the lake has long served as a local recreation spot for residents of the surrounding farm towns rather than a destination lake drawing visitors from across the state.
The lake's depth, modeled at around 40 feet at its deepest point, is modest compared to Michigan's larger glacial lakes but typical for the smaller kettle and impoundment lakes scattered across the Thumb. Fishing families and weekend boaters make up much of the traffic, with the lake's proximity to Flint putting it within easy reach for day trips rather than long vacations. Its size and setting keep it low-key: a working lake for the surrounding county rather than a resort destination, known mainly to the people who live along its shore or drive out from Lapeer and Flint on weekends.
