About Lake Oakland
Lake Oakland sits in Oakland County, Michigan, a few miles northwest of Pontiac, in a landscape shaped by the retreat of glacial ice sheets that left southeastern Michigan dotted with thousands of small lakes. The lake covers about 492 acres and holds roughly twelve miles of shoreline, a ratio that gives it a long, irregular outline rather than a simple round basin. Its maximum depth runs to about 46 feet, modest compared to some of the county's deeper kettle lakes but enough to support a stocked fishery and keep the water cool through summer.
The shoreline is lined mostly with year-round and seasonal homes, typical of Oakland County's lake communities, where residents keep docks, pontoon boats, and fishing skiffs rather than large cruisers. Pontiac, once a center of automobile manufacturing, lies close enough that many lake residents commute there or into greater Detroit for work. Fishing on Lake Oakland runs to bass, bluegill, and panfish, and its twelve miles of shoreline make it a longer paddle or troll than its acreage alone would suggest.
