About Lake Orion
Lake Orion sits in Orion Township, Oakland County, Michigan, just north of Pontiac and about 30 miles from Detroit. The lake covers roughly 477 acres with about 8 miles of shoreline, and like most inland lakes in this part of the state, it occupies a basin carved out during the last glacial retreat. The village that grew along its southern edge took the lake's name directly and became the township's commercial center, with Broadway Street running down to the water.
The lake's shape is irregular, broken into bays and points rather than a single open basin, which spreads its 8 miles of shoreline across a modest 477-acre surface. Average depth stays shallow with a maximum around 35 feet, keeping most of the lake within reach of summer swimmers and ice anglers alike. Cottages and year-round homes ring the shoreline, and the lake has long served as a boating and fishing draw for Oakland County residents living within easy driving distance of Detroit's northern suburbs.
