About Lower Long Lake
Lower Long Lake sits in Oakland County, Michigan, part of the dense cluster of kettle lakes left behind as the glaciers retreated from the region roughly 11,000 to 14,000 years ago. The lake covers about 156 acres and lies just outside Pontiac, in a stretch of southeastern Michigan where small inland lakes sit close together, often connected by channels or narrow roads separating one basin from the next. Development around the shoreline followed the same pattern as many Oakland County lakes: seasonal cottages built in the early and mid-20th century, later replaced or converted into year-round homes as Pontiac and its suburbs grew outward.
The lake runs about three miles of shoreline around a maximum depth near 44 feet, modest compared to some of the larger, steeper lakes in the county but enough to support a mixed fishery and separate the swimming coves from the deeper open water. Residents and visitors use it mainly for fishing, kayaking, and pontoon boating rather than high-speed watersports, a function of its size. Its neighbors, Oakland County's other named lakes, form a loose network that longtime residents navigate by memory, and Lower Long Lake is one of the smaller, quieter entries in that chain.
