About Mona Lake
Mona Lake formed as a drowned river-mouth lake, the lower valley of Black Creek flooded when Lake Michigan's water level rose after the last glacial retreat. It sits in Muskegon County, bordered by Norton Shores, Fruitport Township, and Muskegon Township, a few miles south of downtown Muskegon. A single channel at Lake Harbor connects it to Lake Michigan, the same drowned-mouth pattern that shaped nearby Bear Lake and White Lake along this stretch of coast.
Muskegon County's lumber and manufacturing era left a mark on the lake: in 1985 the EPA listed Mona Lake as a Great Lakes Area of Concern due to legacy industrial and municipal pollution, prompting decades of sediment cleanup and monitoring. Today it draws boaters and anglers from the surrounding Norton Shores and Fruitport neighborhoods, fished for walleye, bass, and panfish, with the Lake Harbor channel giving direct small-boat access out to Lake Michigan.
