About Muskegon Lake

Muskegon Lake is a drowned river-mouth lake in Muskegon, Michigan, formed where the Muskegon River widens at its east end before draining to Lake Michigan through a maintained deep-water channel at the west. The lake covers about 4,230 acres and reaches depths near 70 feet, and decades of industrial use by lumber mills and factories left contamination that a long federal and local restoration effort has worked to reverse. Today its shoreline carries a growing mix of parks, marinas and redeveloped waterfront, with the city of Muskegon built directly around its edge.
