About Walnut Lake
Walnut Lake sits in West Bloomfield and Bloomfield Townships in Oakland County, Michigan, a few miles west of Pontiac. Like most lakes in this part of the state, its basin was carved by retreating glaciers at the end of the last ice age and later filled with meltwater and groundwater. The lake covers roughly 230 acres with about three miles of shoreline, placing it among the mid-sized lakes in a county known for its dense chain of glacial lakes.
The lake is lined with year-round and seasonal homes, a mix that has grown up around Oakland County's lakes since the early 20th century as Detroit-area families sought water access within easy driving distance of the city. Boating, fishing, and swimming are the main draws, with a maximum depth of about 51 feet giving it enough cold-water zone to hold species like walleye and bass. Its position among the county's cluster of small and mid-sized lakes has made it a fixture for residents of the surrounding townships rather than a destination lake.
