About Wamplers Lake
Wamplers Lake sits in Cambridge Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, part of the Irish Hills district along the old US-12 corridor between Ann Arbor and Jackson. Like the other lakes in the chain — Wampler's, Round, Devils, Vineyard — it occupies a kettle basin left behind when the last continental glacier retreated from southern Michigan. The surrounding hills and irregular shoreline are typical of this glacial moraine landscape, which is why the area drew both early farmers and, later, summer cottagers out from the growing cities to the east.
The lake covers roughly 749 acres with about five miles of shoreline, small enough to read as a single community rather than a sprawl of unrelated bays. Manitou Beach, on its shore, grew up as a resort settlement of cottages, a few taverns, and boat liveries serving Detroit and Ann Arbor families who came out for the weekend. Fishing for bass and panfish, water skiing, and pontoon cruising are the lake's ordinary business; the modeled depths run to about 54 feet, deep enough for open water in the middle while the margins stay shallow and weedy near the docks.
