About West Crooked Lake
West Crooked Lake sits in the glacially shaped lake country west of Ann Arbor, Michigan, one of the many kettle and moraine lakes left behind as the last ice sheets retreated from the region thousands of years ago. Its name comes from its outline: a bent, irregular shoreline rather than a simple oval, a shape typical of lakes formed where buried ice blocks melted unevenly into the outwash plain. At roughly 457 acres, it is a mid-sized lake by regional standards, small enough to know by its bends and coves rather than by open-water distance.
The lake carries close to seven miles of shoreline, a long perimeter for its size that comes directly from its crooked, many-fingered shape. That ratio of shoreline to surface area has made it a lake of docks and inlets more than open beaches, drawing homeowners, anglers, and paddlers who favor quiet coves over big water. A maximum depth near 52 feet, modeled rather than measured at a single point, gives it enough cold-water volume to hold fish through summer while keeping most of its basin shallow and warm along the crooked edges.
