The lake

About White Lake

White Lake is a drowned river-mouth lake on Michigan's west coast, formed where the White River widens before reaching Lake Michigan through a channel cut between the dune-lined towns of Whitehall and Montague. The lake covers about 2,570 acres and reaches depths near 70 feet, and its industrial past — including tanneries and a chemical plant — once fouled its water badly enough to draw federal cleanup attention; decades of restoration have since brought the fishery and water quality back. Boating, fishing and the White River Light Station at its mouth are the lake's present-day landmarks.
