About Blue Springs Lake
Blue Springs Lake sits on the Little Blue River in Jackson County, Missouri, between the cities of Blue Springs and Independence. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the dam for flood control on the Little Blue River watershed, and the lake was completed in 1989. Jackson County Parks and Recreation manages the surrounding land under an agreement with the Corps, running the marina, campgrounds, and swim beach that opened along its shoreline in the years after impoundment.
The lake covers roughly 867 acres with about 12 miles of shoreline, threading through forested valleys typical of the Little Blue drainage rather than opening into one wide basin. Its modeled maximum depth is around 67 feet near the dam, though most of the reservoir runs shallower, favoring crappie and catfish over deep-water species. Anglers, pontoon boaters, and Kansas City-area families launch from the Jackson County marina, and the lake sits close enough to Independence and Blue Springs to draw regular weekday traffic, not just weekend crowds.
