About Prairie Lee Lake
Prairie Lee Lake sits in Jackson County, Missouri, a short drive east of Independence, the town where Harry Truman grew up and spent most of his life. The surrounding countryside was farmed for generations, part of the prairie and creek-bottom land typical of eastern Jackson County. Kansas City lies roughly twenty miles to the west, close enough that the lake draws people from the metro area looking for something smaller and quieter than the region's larger Corps of Engineers reservoirs.
At about 109 acres and three miles of shoreline, Prairie Lee Lake is modest in size, closer to a large farm pond than a flood-control reservoir. Its modeled maximum depth of about 37 feet gives it more vertical relief than most of the shallow ponds scattered across the surrounding farmland. Houses ring much of its edge, and the lake serves mainly the people who live along it, functioning as a neighborhood fishing and recreation spot rather than a regional draw.
