About Lake Glenville
Lake Glenville sits above Cashiers, North Carolina, formed in 1941 when Alcoa dammed the West Fork of the Tuckasegee River to power its wartime aluminum smelters. It covers about 1,470 acres and runs to more than 130 feet deep, with the flooded town of Hamburg — its schools, homes and farmland — still under the water. The lake was known as Thorpe Reservoir for decades before taking the name of the village of Glenville on its shore. Steep, forested banks and cold, clear water make it one of the coldest, clearest lakes in the southern Appalachians.
