The lake
About Lake Norman
Lake Norman was created in 1963 when Cowans Ford Dam closed on the Catawba River, and it remains the largest lake in North Carolina — about 34 miles long with 520 miles of shoreline and depths to 110 feet near the dam. The old river channel and flooded roads are still there on the sounders.
Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville and Huntersville grew up around it as Charlotte spread north; the lake is home to the NASCAR community, the Peninsula Club and the Lake Norman State Park side on the quieter north shore.
