The lake

About Lake Toxaway

Lake Toxaway was first filled in 1902 as the centerpiece of a Gilded Age mountain resort in Transylvania County, North Carolina, fed by the Toxaway River. In 1916 the earthen dam gave way in a flood, draining the lake in minutes and sending billions of gallons over Toxaway Falls into South Carolina — the only casualty was a mule, but the resort's grand hotel never reopened and stood empty for decades. The lake wasn't rebuilt until 1960, and it now covers about 640 acres, a private lake ringed by homes rather than the hotel crowd it once drew.
