About Lake Wicwas
Lake Wicwas lies in Meredith, New Hampshire, within the Lakes Region that also holds Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam, and Squam. Like most lakes in the area, its basin was carved by glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age, then filled as the ice melted roughly ten thousand years ago. The lake covers about 287 acres and reaches a maximum depth near 55 feet, small next to its larger neighbors but deep enough to hold cold water through summer. Its outflow eventually drains toward the Merrimack River watershed, like most lakes in this part of the state.
Wicwas has no town center directly on its shore; its frontage is a mix of year-round homes and family camps reached by narrow, winding roads. Meredith, a few miles off, is the nearest hub for services and boat access. The lake's outline is irregular, broken by coves and points that block sightlines from one shore to the next, and its modest size keeps boat traffic lighter than on Winnipesaukee or Winnisquam close by. Loons nest on the lake most summers, and residents have monitored its water clarity and wildlife for years through a local lake association.
