About Nubanusit Lake
Nubanusit Lake sits in the Monadnock region of southwestern New Hampshire, carved into granite bedrock left behind as glaciers retreated from the area roughly 12,000 years ago. The lake spans the towns of Hancock and Nelson, feeding into the Nubanusit Chain of Lakes watershed alongside Spoonwood Lake and Half Moon Pond. Its water eventually drains toward the Contoocook River. The surrounding forestland has long attracted conservation attention, with large tracts protected by the Harris Center for Conservation Education, headquartered on the lake's shore in Hancock.
Much of Nubanusit's roughly 11 miles of shoreline remains undeveloped, a result of coordinated land trust purchases starting in the late 20th century that kept most of the lake free of dense residential building. Small camps and older family cottages line parts of the shore rather than large modern homes. The lake supports loon nesting pairs monitored annually by conservation groups, along with populations of smallmouth bass and lake trout that draw anglers from Hancock and nearby Peterborough. Canoeists and kayakers favor it for the quiet, motor-restricted coves along its northern end.
