About Pawtuckaway Lake
Pawtuckaway Lake sits in Nottingham, New Hampshire, about 20 miles southeast of Manchester. The lake was formed by damming the Pawtuckaway River, and it now covers roughly 605 acres within Pawtuckaway State Park, which the state established around the lake's shoreline. The surrounding hills are the eroded remains of a ring dike, an ancient volcanic formation, and the park's boulder field is one of the largest collections of glacial erratics in the Northeast.
A fire tower stands atop South Mountain, one of three peaks inside the park, built in the 20th century and still staffed during fire season. The lake is popular for largemouth and smallmouth bass, and hosts regular fishing tournaments. Its shoreline, about 12 miles, is a mix of state park land, seasonal cottages, and year-round homes, drawing campers, paddlers, and anglers from around the region rather than a single lakefront town.
