About Penacook Lake
Penacook Lake sits in Concord, New Hampshire, impounded behind a dam that turned a stretch of local watershed into the city's public water supply reservoir. Concord Water Works still draws drinking water from the lake, and public access is limited to protect it: no gas-powered motors, and a permit required for fishing or paddling. The surrounding land stays largely undeveloped forest and watershed buffer rather than private shorefront, a condition tied directly to its role as a municipal water source rather than a recreational destination.
The lake covers about 309 acres with roughly 5 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth near 44 feet, modest numbers that keep it closer to pond-scale than New Hampshire's larger lakes. It sits a few miles from downtown Concord and the village of Penacook, drawing local anglers who fish under the water works' permit system rather than weekend crowds from farther away.
