About Spofford Lake
Spofford Lake sits in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, in the state's southwestern corner near the Vermont line and the city of Keene. The lake is spring-fed rather than dammed, drawing its water from underground sources rather than a single inlet stream. It covers roughly 670 acres and holds close to five miles of shoreline, much of it lined with camps and cottages that date back generations. Route 9 runs along its northern edge, connecting Chesterfield to Keene and putting the lake within easy reach of travelers passing through the Monadnock Region.
For over a century the lake has drawn summer residents, and several youth camps have operated on its shores, teaching generations of children to swim, canoe, and fish. Anglers work its waters for bass and pike, and its clarity has made it a favorite swimming spot for families from both New Hampshire and neighboring Massachusetts. The lake reaches about 50 feet at its deepest point, deep enough to stay cold well into summer even as its shallow coves warm quickly nearby. That mix of a small deep basin ringed by broad shallows gives the lake two different characters depending on where you stand on its shore.
