About Lake Musconetcong
Lake Musconetcong sits on the Musconetcong River in northwestern New Jersey, held back by a dam that once helped feed water to the Morris Canal, the 19th-century waterway that carried coal and iron between Phillipsburg and Newark. The lake borders three communities: Netcong and part of Roxbury Township in Morris County, and Stanhope in Sussex County. After the canal stopped operating in 1924, the reservoir remained, and the shoreline gradually filled in with cottages, marinas, and year-round homes.
The lake covers about 294 acres with roughly four miles of shoreline, small enough to cross by kayak in an afternoon but large enough for water-skiing and pontoon traffic on summer weekends. Anglers fish it for largemouth bass, pickerel, and catfish, and the state stocks it with trout in spring. In recent years the lake has dealt with harmful algal blooms strong enough to trigger summer swimming advisories, a recurring issue for shallow, developed lakes across the region.
