About Lake Hopatcong
Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in New Jersey, about 2,500 acres with 45 miles of shoreline and depths to 58 feet, raised to its present size in the 1830s as a feeder for the Morris Canal. The name is Lenape; the canal's inclined planes hauled boats over the hills to the west.
Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mount Arlington and Roxbury share the shore; in the early 1900s it was a full-scale resort with hotels, steamboats, and Bertrand Island's amusement park, and the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club still races on it.
