About Cowan Lake
Cowan Lake sits in Clinton County, Ohio, near Dayton, formed by damming Cowan Creek. The impoundment created a shoreline that stretches roughly eight miles around, with a state park established alongside it offering campgrounds and boat launches. Its water covers about 633 acres, modest in size compared to Ohio's larger reservoirs but sufficient to support a year-round fishing and boating population drawn from surrounding Clinton and Warren counties.
The lake's maximum depth runs around 36 feet, shallow enough that sunlight reaches much of the lake bed and supports dense vegetation growth in warmer months. That shallowness shapes who uses it: bass and crappie anglers work the weed lines, families use the swimming beach near the state park, and slower pontoon traffic dominates over high-speed boating. Nearby towns like Wilmington and Clarksville send a steady stream of weekend visitors rather than year-round lakefront residents, keeping the shoreline mostly public parkland instead of private development.
