About Kiser Lake
Kiser Lake sits in Champaign County, Ohio, about four miles northwest of St. Paris and near the small community of Conover. A dam first went up on the site in 1840 to power a mill, but it eventually failed and the millpond drained. The lake as it exists now dates to 1939, when a new dam was built after John W. Kiser donated the land to the state in 1932; the basin refilled by 1940. Ohio has managed the site as Kiser Lake State Park since.
At roughly 373 acres with about 5 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth near 41 feet, Kiser Lake is small and shallow compared to reservoirs like Indian Lake or Buckeye Lake. Motors are not permitted, so the water is used by sailboats, canoes, and kayaks rather than powerboats. Anglers fish it for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. St. Paris and Conover remain small rural towns, and most of the shoreline is state park land rather than private cottage development.
