About South Tenmile Lake
South Tenmile Lake sits behind a wall of coastal sand dunes in Coos County, Oregon, one part of the connected Tenmile Lakes system that drains west to the Pacific near Coos Bay. The dunes sealed off an old river valley, backing up fresh water into a lake with a footprint of roughly 937 acres and a shoreline that runs close to 19 miles. Soundings have found depths near 321 feet in places, unusual for a lake held in by sand rather than rock or a dam.
The town of Lakeside sits on the lake's shore and serves as the main access point, with public boat ramps and a marina used by anglers year-round. South Tenmile is known chiefly for its largemouth bass, warm and weedy compared to most Oregon coastal water, and hosts bass tournaments through the season. Cabins and vacation homes line stretches of the shore, and the connected North Tenmile Lake and nearby Eel Lake make the area a hub for coastal freshwater boating.
