About Upper Klamath Lake
Upper Klamath Lake sits in a shallow basin in south-central Oregon, the remnant of a much larger Ice Age lake that once covered the Klamath Basin. Link River Dam, built in 1921 at the lake's southern outlet in Klamath Falls, controls its flow into the Klamath River. The lake covers roughly 68,000 acres, making it the largest lake by surface area in Oregon, though it runs shallow across most of its basin. Its shoreline winds for around 110 miles past marshes, agricultural land, and low hills at the edge of the Cascade Range.
The lake has long been central to the Klamath Tribes, who fish for two native sucker species, the Lost River sucker and shortnose sucker, known locally as c'waam and koptu and now protected as endangered. Farms surrounding the lake draw irrigation water through the federal Klamath Reclamation Project, established in 1906, which drained much of the basin's original wetlands for agriculture. Klamath Falls, on the lake's southern shore, remains the largest town on the water, along with smaller communities like Modoc Point and Rocky Point. The lake also draws anglers for its rainbow trout fishery and birdwatchers tracking American white pelicans.
